OSI Industries’ Transition to a Multinational Company

OSI Industries is a privately owned holding meat processor company in the United States of America with its international headquarters situated in Aurora, Illinois. The company serves not only the retail but also the food service industries globally. The meat processing company was established in 1909 and today, it is referred to as the premier global food provider by other global leading brands in the industry. OSI Industries supplies its customers with fresh and quality products at affordable prices.

OSI Industries is currently one of the leading food production companies in the whole world. The company has approximately 20,000 employees in 65 OSI facilities situated in 17 countries. The company emerged from a butcher shop to a leading multinational food company. The history of OSI Industries is rooted deep in the American immigration experience. Otto Kolschowsky was a member of the German-immigrant community that settled in Chicago during the 20th century. The German immigrants totaled a quarter of the population in the town. The thriving city of Chicago was then both the country’s industrial center and the entry point for new immigrants who wanted to develop farms in the plains.

In 1909, Otto Kolschowsky established a tiny retail meat center and a butcher shop so as to serve his community two years after immigrating into the United States. He was good in managing his business and ten years later, at the end of the First World War, the butcher shop has grown meat wholesale business. It also expanded its operations to Maywood in the Chicago suburbs. Within ten years, the immigrant family business was renamed Otto & Sons in 1928. The company continued to expand up to the end of the Second World War. During the post war economic period, the demand for food and expansion of businesses increased and two small families formed a business alliance. Ray Kroc, the founder and owner of the McDonald’s restaurant has a handshake deal with the sons of Otto, Arthur and Harry, to be the company’s supplier of fresh ground meat.

The transformation of Otto & Sons regional supplier to OSI Industries, an international corporation took place after two decades. The new technology of flash freezing-cryogenic food processing method in which food is frozen with liquefied nitrogen enabled the company to supply its products to many parts of the country and globe. The process was cost-effective and fast. In 1975, OSI & Sons changed its name to OSI Industries and ever since it has been leading in supplying food products globally.
