The First Release of GTL’s Wrongdoings by Securus Technologies

Most service providers undertake their operations as per the industry regulations and rules. However, some institutions are driven or motivated by the greed for more revenue or high-profit margins. Global Tel Link (GTL) is one of the service providers in the inmate communication industry that was recently accused of wrongdoings involving integrity breaches by one of the leading inmate communications provider, Securus Technologies.

Details regarding the unlawful actions committed by Global Tek Link are expected to be released in a span of six months in terms of findings, facts, reports, and articles. Securus, which is the source of the findings, condemned the actions of GTL through its Chief Executive Officer, Richard A. Smith. Disappointed by GTL’s wrongdoings, he claimed that Securus Technologies is motivated by the desire to serve its clients rather than make more money.

In its first release, Securus put emphasis on the findings filed by the Louisiana Public Service Commission in a seventeen-page document, Order No.U-20784-B. The report revolved around the services of GTL when it provided outbound communication services to the Louisiana Department of Correction’s inmates.

The Unlawful Actions of GTL
Deliberate programming of the telephone clocks. This involved adding about 15 or 36 seconds to the duration of a single call.
Programming of phones in a bid to rate the calls higher than the permitted rate.
Global Tel Link also practiced unlawful double billing of calls.
Overcharging customer calls by adding extra fees. Consequently, the Louisiana PSC found out that the taxpayers were overcharged a sum of about $1,243,000.
